Research Opportunities

Research is an essential component for graduate students. Supervised and independent research experience will expand your knowledge and skill sets for your future career, and more importantly, will culture you into an independent thinker, and will benefit your professional performance and also make you a successful life.

The Petroleum Engineering Program has professors who have broad expertise on heavy oil recovering, enhanced oil recovery techniques, reservoir simulation, well completion, offshore oil techniques and production engineering. As a unit of Geological Sciences and Engineering Department, you have great opportunities (via seminars, talking with professors and classmates, and others) to touch other subjects in geology and geophysics and geology engineering fields, which will significantly strengthen your understanding of problems in petroleum engineering and benefit your direction selection and problem-solving.

As a graduate student, you will conduct your research under the supervision of one or more professors in the Petroleum Engineering Program. The Petroleum Engineering Program provides state-of-the-art facilities, both for laboratory experiments and model simulation and advanced computation. You also have easy access to research and learning facilities of other labs, including the Environmental and Emerging Contaminants Research Center,Graduate Center for Materials Research, the Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center.

We encourage students from petroleum and other engineering disciplines (e.g. chemistry, geology, petrology) and some science disciplines (e.g. math, geophysics) and with a strong interest in pursuing advanced degrees to apply. You are welcome to express your research interests. Professors will work with you and design the best possible graduate program for your goals.
